MIDFLORIDA now State-Chartered

On September 1, 2009, MIDFLORIDA became a state-chartered credit union. The membership vote, which was held in August, recorded 91 percent of the members who voted as voting for the conversion. We’re pleased that so many of our members share our vision for the future of the credit union.

While the conversion promises MIDFLORIDA the option for future expansion, the most notable change is the name – we are now MIDFLORIDA Credit Union. However, we will continue to use the name we’ve established as one of our guiding principles – MIDFLORIDA, What A Bank Should Be.

When was your last financial checkup?
A message from Heacock Financial

Nearly everyone has heard their doctor preach, at one time or another, about the need for routine checkups. Yet, how often do you consider the need for a review of your personal finances? By asking yourself the following questions, you may determine that the time has come for a financial checkup:

  • Do you have financial goals? If so, are they in writing and do they include deadlines?
  • Is your debt under control? Do you pay off your credit cards each month?
  • Have you reviewed your investment portfolio recently? Are you comfortable with the level of risk associated with your current investments?
  • Are you satisfied with the rate of return that your investments are generating?
  • Have you started a retirement fund yet? If so, will your current rate of savings provide an adequate fund to meet your future retirement needs?
  • Have you reviewed your tax situation recently to see if there are ways to reduce your tax liability?
  • Have you started a savings program to meet the cost requirements of your children’s college education? If so, will your current savings rate be adequate given the effects of inflation and rising tuition costs?
  • Have you reviewed your life insurance coverage recently? In the event of an untimely death, will your current policies provide adequately for your spouse and/or children?

If you are not satisfied with your answers to any of these questions, contact one of the advisors at Heacock Financial today. Together, they can help you work on getting your finances on track.

Business lending ...
still local with MIDFLORIDA

Many central Florida business owners are now experiencing what it’s like to become a number as many local banks have been gobbled up by larger, regionally run banks. MIDFLORIDA’s Business Department touts a team of local commercial loan officers that know the local market and want to know you, your business and your business goals. If you’re looking to be known rather than be a number, call (863) 616-2164 to speak to a commercial loan officer.

Local lending decisions up to $5 million!

Safety Tip of the Quarter: Facebook phishing

Facebook, which has become a popular means for keeping families and friends connected, is one of the newest victims of a recent phishing scam. Here’s how it works: a Facebook message is sent from a friend’s account (simulating the message normally received when a friend has made a post). The message includes a link which directs you to a log-in page. Once you have typed in your e-mail address and password, the scam is continued by allowing your address files to be hacked, and then your friends are sent the message. Of course the real danger is giving a fraudster access to personal details that may make it easier to steal your identity or defraud your accounts.

How to avoid this scam: Get in the habit of typing in addresses of sites you commonly visit and avoid clicking on links sent to you in e-mail messages. Plus, use phishing filters on your e-mail.
