From Meager Beginnings
MIDFLORIDA Credit Union is proud to be a part of so many milestones in the lives of our members. From financing first homes to making retirement dreams a reality, we focus on improving the financial well-being of each of our members.
MIDFLORIDA began in 1954 as Polk County Teachers Credit Union. The Polk County School Superintendent told a young history teacher, Rebecca Keith, that Polk County teachers needed a credit union and asked if she would serve as its first Treasurer. Mrs. Keith completed the necessary paperwork to establish the credit union and began accepting deposits, which she was known to keep in a shoebox at her home.
Based in Lakeland, Florida, Polk County Teachers Credit Union started with just 10 charter members but finished its first year with 273 members and approximately $7,000 in deposits.
In 1957, the Credit Union expanded its charter to serve the employees and volunteers of the Highlands County School Board. By 1963, MIDFLORIDA opened its first professional office. In the late 1970s, the organization changed its name to MIDFLORIDA Schools Federal Credit Union. Growth continued, and in 1997 the Credit Union received approval to expand its charter to include the communities of Polk and Highlands counties. This expansion marked a significant turning point, allowing anyone who lived, worked, worshipped, or attended school in either county to become a member. That same year, MIDFLORIDA Schools Federal Credit Union became MIDFLORIDA Federal Credit Union.
In 2002, MIDFLORIDA expanded its community charter to include Okeechobee, Sumter, and Hardee counties. As part of its plans for future growth, the Credit Union converted to a state charter in 2009 and adopted the name MIDFLORIDA Credit Union.
From 2010 through 2026, mergers with Bay Pines Credit Union, Martin Federal Credit Union, Community Bank & Trust of Florida, and Prime Meridian Bank expanded MIDFLORIDA's reach across the state, adding locations from Tallahassee to Naples and serving communities from coast to coast. During this period of growth, membership more than doubled and total assets increased by 240%.
From humble beginnings operating out of a shoebox, MIDFLORIDA has grown into one of Florida's largest credit unions, with more than 70 branches, over 1,550 employees, and assets exceeding $9 billion. Today, MIDFLORIDA serves more than 500,000 members with products and services that rival those of any financial institution, while remaining committed to the credit union philosophy of exceptional personal service.
